The Taoist Temple in Cebu City

The migration of the Chinese to Cebu City has led to the merging of some Oriental traditions with Filipino customs.  Comprising 15% of the Cebu population, the Chinese united in their stand to build a Taoist temple in 1972 for Chinese worshippers, and even for Filipino appreciation.  The Taoist Temple in Cebu is located at the upscale Beverly Hills subdivision, where the affluent of Cebu reside.

The Taoist Temple in Cebu features colorful and ornate design of the Orient.  The ceiling is shaped like a pagoda, a replica of the Great Wall of China and images of Chinese dragons are found on the premises.  Guests climb up 81 steps, representing the 81 chapters of the Taoist Scriptures.  Up in the chapel, joss sticks can be lit and fortunes can be read.  It may be a tiring ascent to the top of the hill but the rewards are well worth it.  The view of the Cebu and Bohol islands from atop is breathtaking, especially during sunset.
